The leader of Vox says they will do “whatever is necessary for Spain to be free”

Abascal announces 'high-mindedness' in response to the left's pact for the Senate

Late this Friday, the PSOE and several far-left parties announced a coalition for the Senate.

This coalition aims to take advantage of the specific system for electing senators—which grants a significant edge to the candidate with the most votes—in order to secure an absolute majority in the Senate and gain a say in the reappointment of the Constitutional Court (TC), currently controlled by the left. This coalition has sparked understandable concern among many center-right voters, as left-wing control of the Constitutional Court could strike down any legislative reforms introduced by a new government, effectively blocking any attempt to dismantle laws established by the left.

In light of this possibility—and despite the fact that the People’s Party (PP) and Vox have not formed a coalition for the Senate (the deadline for doing so expired last night)—Vox president Santiago Abascal took to Twitter this morning at 11:00 AM CET to cite a report from Europa Press regarding the left’s pact for the Senate, stating the following:

“Sánchez is capable of anything to destroy Spain. But we, too, are capable of anything to save it.

I send a message of calm, responsibility, and commitment.

We will act with high-mindedness and do whatever is necessary for Spain to be free —beholden neither to Sánchez nor to any of his cronies.”

A few hours earlier, Esdiario —a media outlet aligned with the PP—reported this morning that “the PP and Vox are finalizing a counter-move to gain 15 seats” in the Senate. The report states: “Esdiario has learned that Vox is working with the PP to refrain from fielding its own candidates in twelve constituencies; instead, their candidates will be integrated into the PP’s lists. A similar arrangement is planned for Navarre, involving the UPN. Feijóo’s camp estimates that this operation could secure them up to 15 additional senators.”

As of now, neither the PP nor Vox has confirmed this information. Nevertheless—and in contrast to the situation three years ago—the PP and Vox are currently displaying a spirit of mutual understanding, as well as a clear sense of prudence in how they frame their messages. While this does not mean setting aside the inherent ideological differences between the two parties, both are directing the bulk of their political fire toward Sánchez and the PSOE. This strategic alignment—unprecedented until now—has been well-received by the supporters of both parties, likely due to their exhaustion after eight years of socialist-led governments.
