Spain has the misfortune of facing an attack on its territorial integrity with a government built on lies.
Pedro Sánchez’s government has repeatedly lied about the wave of migrants arriving from Morocco. It did so by claiming it received no warnings from intelligence services, and it also lied when providing figures on the illegal migrants remaining in Ceuta. Sánchez himself exposed this yesterday when, during an interview on La Sexta, he announced that 6,000 accommodation places are being prepared and that the goal is to reach 10,000.
Let us recall that on Friday, July 31—the day after that wave of migrant arrivals began—Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, a Socialist, stated: "Virtually everyone who entered Ceuta has already returned to Morocco."
On the morning of August 1 —two days after that invasion began— Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska (a Socialist) put the number of arrivals at around 60,000 and claimed that "almost all of them have already left Ceuta." This was a lie refuted that same day by the Ceuta government and local media, who pointed out that thousands of illegal immigrants remained in the city.
On August 4 —after stating three days earlier that "almost everyone" had left— Marlaska changed his account and put the number of those remaining at fewer than 2,000, asserting that 72,000 intruders had entered and that more than 70,000 had already left Ceuta.
On August 13, a new set of figures arrived from the Ministry of the Interior: Marlaska stated that 5,000 illegal immigrants remained in Ceuta. In other words, in nine days, the number had more than doubled compared to what he had said on August 4. Marlaska reiterated the figure of 5,000 remaining intruders on August 28 in Congress.
And now we learn from Sánchez himself that they intend to house 10,000 illegal immigrants in Ceuta—that is, twice the number Marlaska claimed remained there during his appearance before Congress on August 28. Only two conclusions can be drawn: either they did not know how many intruders remained weeks ago and fabricated the figures—possibly to create the impression that they had the situation under control and to downplay the gravity of these events—or they knew perfectly well how many remained as of July 31 and deceived the Spanish people.
It is nothing new for this government to lie. Our people have spent eight years enduring a relentless wave of lies from an unscrupulous government that systematically uses deception as a tool to shake off problems and evade responsibility for any issue. The difference now is that they are lying to us about the scale of an act of hybrid warfare against Spain, while simultaneously appearing grateful and accommodating toward the country that orchestrated that migratory invasion. Lying about something of this nature should be punishable by imprisonment. A democratic country cannot tolerate a government that lies—least of all when it does so to protect a nation that has committed a hostile act against us.
