The Spanish left is experiencing a surreal situation, after many years of presenting itself as the standard-bearer of feminism.
Last Sunday, the socialist newspaper El País ran the headline: "'Feminationalism' and a hard line on immigrants are boosting Abascal's support among women". The article's lead paragraph points directly to the root of the problem for the Spanish Left: "The percentage of the female electorate that views Vox as the best party to handle immigration has nearly doubled in two years". The rest of the report attempts to analyze why many Spanish women are abandoning the "feminist" Left and shifting to Vox— a party that outlets like El País have labeled "chauvinist" simply for contradicting the Left's ideological tenets.
Once again, the Spanish Left proves incapable of facing reality—specifically, the impact its own mass immigration policies are having on society. Progressive media outlets like El País reduce everything to an issue of "xenophobia," yet the facts are becoming increasingly difficult to mask with propaganda. Many Spanish women already deal daily with the consequences of living in unsafe neighborhoods resulting from mass immigration. In January 2025, it was revealed that rapes in Catalonia—the Spanish region with the third-highest percentage of foreign residents—have tripled over five years. In May 2025, it emerged that 43.3% of perpetrators of gang sexual assaults in Spain are foreign nationals, despite making up only 14.13% of the country's population. Another statistic came to light in December: proportionally, foreign nationals commit twice as many murders as Spaniards within Spain.
Obviously, this does not mean that all foreigners are criminals, or even that they are bad people. As I have been pointing out for years, statistics are an indicator of social reality, not an individual portrait. And for years, statistics have shown a significant percentage of criminals among Algerian, Nigerian, and Moroccan immigrants. This is a statistical fact, regardless of the fact that some label it "xenophobia."
Statistics are a way of understanding what is happening on our streets—those everyday realities that many of us witness daily but that some politicians and journalists prefer to ignore. The Left has pursued policies that have fostered mass immigration from Islamic countries—that is, from a cultural environment vastly different from our own, where women face extreme discrimination. Instead of promoting integration policies to encourage immigrants from these backgrounds to adopt Western values, the Spanish Left has focused on actions such as defending the Islamic veil (including the burqa) —a garment that stands as the ultimate symbol of women's subordination to men in the vast majority of Islamic countries— and has reduced prison sentences for rapists, fully aware of what it was doing.
The Left's propensity for and tolerance of Islamic immigration stem largely from the fact that a significant portion of the Left and Islamism share a hatred of the West as well as antisemitism —a hatred of Jews that has seen a considerable surge in Spain, fueled in large measure by the political and media Left and by Islamic extremism. In February, Communist MEP Irene Montero, of the Podemos party, even openly advocated for the "replacement" of Spaniards by immigrants, framing it as a "replacement of fascists, replacement of racists, replacement of freeloaders." Coincidentally, Montero was the primary architect behind the reduction of sentences for rapists during her tenure as Minister of Equality in Pedro Sánchez's government.
Under these circumstances, the Spanish left’s inability to acknowledge the consequences of its policies is yet another example of its fanaticism. All too often, socialists and communists only admit to having been wrong when they believe they failed to apply their ideological dogmas with sufficient persistence. That is why the Left cannot grasp why many women are shifting their support to parties like Vox. Indeed, rather than acknowledging the social problem it has created—which would force it to admit that its ideological premises are flawed—it will not be long before we see the Left scolding Spanish women for turning to the Right, displaying the same ideological blindness that drove Socialist MP Margarita Nelken to oppose women's suffrage in 1931 because the majority of women were Catholic.
