A silence that contrasts with his false accusations against the State of Israel

Why doesn't Pedro Sánchez accuse Putin of genocide? Spain continues to buy Russian gas

Pedro Sánchez's government has been leveling false accusations of "genocide" against Israel for several years now, adopting the Hamas narrative.

While joining the infamous far-left and Islamist campaign against the only real democracy in the Middle East, the attitude of the socialist-communist coalition governing Spain is very different regarding Russia: Sánchez has not once accused Putin of "genocide," or even of engaging in terrorism, as other European countries have done. This silence is part of a series of favors granted by the Sánchez government to Vladimir Putin's dictatorship, including Spain's massive purchase of Russian gas, thereby helping to finance Russian aggression against Ukraine.

On September 1, the pro-government newspaper *El País* acknowledged: "Spain sees a surge in Russian gas purchases just months before Europe's definitive ban." That socialist-leaning outlet presented shocking figures regarding the contribution Spain—under Sánchez's leadership—was making to the Russian economy in the midst of the invasion of Ukraine: "Natural gas imports from Russia rose by 42% in the first half of the year, reaching 37,172 gigawatt-hours (GWh), according to the latest Hydrocarbons Statistical Bulletin from the Strategic Reserves Corporation of Petroleum Products (CORES), published this Monday."

This Thursday, Enagás published its statistical bulletin for August 2026 (see PDF). The report indicates that in the first eight months of 2026, Spain imported 41,576 GWh of natural gas from Russia, representing 17% of the total natural gas imported by Spain during that period. Imports of Russian gas over the last 12 months total 53,696 GWh.

While Spain helps finance Putin's war against the Ukrainian people through these purchases, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares confirmed today that he will veto Ukraine's accession to the European Union if it does not accept three Spanish regional languages (Catalan, Basque, and Galician) as official EU languages—despite the EU's standard practice of recognizing only those languages that member states have previously designated as national languages. As I noted last Sunday, this constitutes a betrayal of Ukraine by the Sánchez government while it purchases large quantities of gas from Russia and feigns support for the Ukrainian people against the invaders.

Given this, one might ask: Is Sánchez’s government refraining from accusing Putin of genocide—or even terrorism—due to some sort of secret agreement regarding the invasion of Ukraine that contradicts its public stance? Might we eventually discover some kind of understanding or pact between the current Spanish government and the Kremlin—similar to the one that prevents it from criticizing Morocco following the Moroccan-led migrant surge into Ceuta on July 30?
