Polish Army pays tribute to heroes of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the start of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, the largest act of insurgency of World War II.

Warsaw 1944: when Poland rose against the Third Reich ... and Stalin stand idly by
Armia Krajowa: the history of the greatest resistance movement of the World War II

For 63 days and in inferior conditions, the fighters of the Armia Krajowa (AK, Home Army) resisted the German forces in Warsaw, in a heroic feat whose purpose was to liberate Poland before the arrival of the Red Army and thus prevent the Polish people from being subjected to a communist dictatorship after suffering the German occupation. Stalin's army stopped its advance at the Vistula River and allowed Hitler to finish off the Polish resistance and leave the city of Warsaw practically razed to the ground.

In the last few hours, those AK heroes (there are still some survivors) have been honoured by the Polish Army in Warsaw and other places in Poland. You can see here some pictures of these tributes released by the Polish Ministry of National Defence. Cześć i chwała bohaterom! Honour and glory to the heroes!

The Warsaw Uprising Monument on Krasiński Square was unveiled on 1 August 1989. It depicts several Armia Krajowa fighters wearing uniforms captured from the Germans and "Polonized" with the White Eagle, the national emblem of Poland, and with armbands in the colours of the Polish flag.

Poland is a deeply Catholic country, and the vast majority of Armia Krajowa members were Catholic. During yesterday's event on Krasiński Square, a mass was held in honour of the heroes of the Uprising. The officer in the centre is carrying a staff identical to the one used by Polish Pope St. John Paul II.

The Apel Pamięci, the Polish Army ceremony to honour its Fallen, took place yesterday at Krasiński Square.
