Since ancient times, dogs have accompanied human beings in the most diverse situations, including wars.

Today, military dogs are four-legged soldiers who carry out very important tasks, which include search and rescue, security and combat missions, the detection of explosives and improvised explosive devices (IED), and also drug detection. In Spain, one of the institutions dedicated to training future military dogs is theHorse Breeding of the Armed Forces, which brings together a series of centers dependent on the Ministry of Defense.

In 2011, the Cría Caballar Canine Breeding and Socialization Unit was founded at the Caballar Breeding Center of Ávila. The mission of that unit is "the breeding and preparation, through socialization and exercises to enhance instincts, of dogs suitable for training", in order for them to serve in different missions in the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Royal Guard, the Military Emergency Unit and the Civil Guard. The breeding and training of these dogs begins with their birth, since this unit "has mother dogs of Belgian Malinois, French and Belgian line and German Shepherds, all of them selected through demanding tests", as stated in its website.

The choice of these breeds is not accidental: "The vitality, resistance, intensity and quality of instincts of the Belgian Malinois, or the balance, ductility and security of the German Shepherd, among other qualities, make them capable of covering almost all the needs of the various specialties in which they will carry out their tasks," says the Horse Breeding of the Spanish Armed Forces. This selection and preparation is very important, since these dogs have a very important role in our safety and can help save lives, as they have already demonstrated on different occasions. This Monday, the Ministry of Defense published an interesting video showing how these puppies become military dogs (the video is in Spanish, you can activate the automatic English subtitles in the bottom bar of the player):
